About this blog: we would like to invite everyone to comment on what we post. So don't hold back and tell us what you think! Making games is a process where you constantly learn new things and where you have to adjust to them, evolving the game in something new. All things that we show here are very Work In Progress and should be regarded as such.
The Alpha is here!
We are really pleased to share the fruits of our hard work in this first ever Alpha event for Rogues with Benefits.
Would like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you! for taking the time to participate in this alpha event. You have no idea how much it means to us.
Everyone that signed up for the alpha should have received a download link in their sign-up mail. If you haven't, drop us a line in the feedback tool on the top right of this page or at firstname.lastname@example.org
Join the public facebook group for this alpha here.
This Alpha is broken, incomplete, not fun to play and is full of bugs.
So, with that out of the way...
The list of missing features and things that are not really working out just yet is huge. That's what alpha's are for. We are looking for all the feedback that we can get, so that we can improve the game so the next alpha will be way more fun to play and won't crash at all (last one is not a promise).
You can share the link of the Alpha or the downloaded client to your friends so that you can play and die together.
You cannot share the link or the downloaded client on any public available site.
If you want to show off how good you are: feel free to share screenshots, livestream or recorded movies with anyone. The only catch is:
Don't remove the in-game watermark. Mention it's the Alpha of Rogues with Benefits in the title, introduction and any accompanied text. Provide a link to our website: www.rogueswithbenefits.com
You cannot make money from the alpha build in any way or form, except from potential ad revenue on livestreams or/and recorded videos on any video hosting site.
Feel free to share us a link if you are live streaming or of any video hosting site.
The Alpha will be available from 23rd October 12:00 PM UTC till 25th October 20:00 PM UTC. After that we will terminate the connection, so enjoy it while it lasts.
By downloading and playing the alpha you agree that it's ok for us to collect data from your play sessions. We will only use this to improve the game and is completely anonymous.
How does this thing work?
Mashing the mouse buttons repeatedly doesn't work. Every attack has to charge first through holding down the mouse buttons.
For those of you that played the game before, we changed the control scheme a bit. Let us know what you think of it through the feedback form.
Look at you! Freshly randomly generated you. If you start the game for the first time or die while playing you will generate a new character with a random skill set.
You'll start in your clan's hideout. In the future you can see all the rewards and spoils of your adventure in here. For now, just walk through the door to go to the server list.
You can create a new server and optionally lock it with a password. You can also join an existing game that's still in the lobby. At this point you can't join a game in progress and there's no way to get back into a game after a disconnect.
Click ready if you want to play! If all connected players are ready the game will start. If you want to wait for more players (max 4), then don't click this button yet.
Hover over a skill to see a handy tooltip. You can also test it in this lobby to see if it's working for you.
You can send us feedback from within the game by clicking on the feedback button in your top right, just like here on the site. Providing your email address is optional, but it gives us the change to get back to you if we need further information.
The most immediate goal is to find the keys to the locked doors, open them and find the way towards the boss.
You will be automatically teleported to the boss room if all players that are still alive stand on this emblem:
The boss is still not implemented, yet we have a little surprise for you. Awww, the mystery.
After each completed level the difficulty is increased. How long can you last?
To makes things a bit easier: You will revive and gain full health if you reach the boss room, just don't eat too much cake if you happen to attend a party.
There are a couple of skills in the alpha. About half of them were added very recently, so they are mostly for fun and aren't balanced or a representation of the final skills. Let us know through the feedback form what your favorite skills are.
Every skill has different states: the charge, attack, recover and cooldown state as seen from left to right. Different restrictions apply when you are in certain states. You cannot cast the same skill in cooldown state and you cannot switch a skill in it's recovery state.
Please be advised: all the beam skills have sticky aim, where they will stick to the last aimed at character in the game. This obviously makes it easier to aim, yet is not final behavior and we'll tweak this into something less annoying.
Melee Slash - Hit someone in the face with this Melee attack. You will always start with this skill.
Single Arrow - Strike from a far with deadly precision. You will always start with this skill.
Triple Arrow - Why shoot just a single arrow when you could be shooting three?
Multi Arrow - Keep firing arrows until you run out of arrows... or enemies.
Fire Ball - Burn it to the ground. Fire a fireball projectile at your foe.
Ring of Fire - Some rogues, just want to watch the world burn. Fire more fireballs than you can count before burning up.
Shield Beam - Cast a beam that prevents any damage on your friend... or your enemy.
Multi Shield Beam - For the true pacifist: shield everything!
Fire Beam - If this was science fiction, we would call it a laser. It's hot and it burns.
Ice Beam - Freeeeeze! Hold it right there and put your hands where I can see them.
Crossbow Turret - If you are lazy, this is the skill for you. Let the turret do all the work.
What's the alpha for?
This alpha we want to test the basic and core elements of the game. That means:
- Is it fun to play?
- Are the controls any good?
- Does killing feel satisfying?
- Are the goals clear?
- Do skills behave in a predictable manner?
- Do you feel empowered?
- Are you in control?
Any feedback you can give to us on this is greatly appreciated.
Of course, any bugs that you will find or things you want to be included in the game are great things to send us feedback on!
Don't hold back, you don't have to be nice, just tell us if things are shit. We will fix that.
Known Issues/ bugs
There are a couple of known issues/ bugs. The most important ones are listed below:
- MacOSX shaders don't compile properly. The game is playable, but with some graphical glitches. We are working on getting a proper Mac to test on. Sorry Mac users!
- The generator fails. There is an issue where it can't properly place all the needed rooms. You will be transferred back to the tavern if this happens.
- Skills in the hideout sometimes don't work. We have no clue why. If you go to the tavern/ lobby everything works again.
- If all your skill icons are blue, the character couldn't be loaded. Please try again/ restart the game.
- No Ingame options. If the performance is bad, try the debug mode in the launcher. That is the most bare bones we can do right now.
- If you have really bad performance, try running the game at a lower resolution, preferably in a window. That will help a lot!
- Pathfinding is still not optimal. They get stuck and sometimes walk away completely, probably just scared of you.
- Dual casting skills. If you mash the buttons real hard, sometimes you shoot 2 skills at once.
- The boss seems friendly. We don't know why either. He is just one happy fellow.
Thanks for playing the alpha!
